कां सोस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामर्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं तृप्तां तर्पयन्तीम्
पद्मे स्थितां पद्मवर्णां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम्
कां सोस्मितां – There is a Pathabheda (variation in reading) for this: 'कां सोस्मयाम्.'
काम् – सुखस्वरूपाम् – She is the embodiment of bliss and happiness.
We say that Sri Hari is in a state of perpetual Ananda because Mata Lakshmi is always with him.
आनन्दमयस्य पुरुषोत्तमस्य आनन्दहेतुरियम् – She is the very cause of his joy.
प्रिया तु सीता रामस्य दाराः पितृकृता इति
गुणाद्रूपगुणाच्चापि प्रीतिर्भूयोऽभ्यवर्धत
Because of her virtues and beauty, Sita became adored by Rama. However, this is not the primary reason. The primary reason is:
दाराः पितृकृता इति – She was chosen by his father. The wedding was arranged with the approval of Dasaratha. This shows Rama’s Pitrubhakti (devotion to his father).
Lord Rama is called Maryada Purushottama for such reasons. The primary reason Sita became dear to him is that she was his father’s approved choice.
Today, many youngsters claim, 'I will marry whomever I choose, not someone chosen by my parents.' They argue, 'My parents are conventional and do not know anything. It is my life, and I will decide whom to live with.'
However, the Lord, whom we call Purushottama (the noblest and greatest among men), found Sita adorable primarily because she was approved by his father.
Similarly, तथैव रामः सीतायाः प्राणेभ्योऽपि प्रियोऽभवत् – Rama became dearer to Sita than her own life. Their mutual love and devotion are the reasons for Sri Hari’s Ananda.
Hence, she is called Kaa – the reason for Sri Hari’s bliss.
सोत्स्मिताम् – सोत्स्मयाम् –
सोत्स्मिताम् – Due to Takara Lopa (loss of the letter 'Ta'), it becomes 'सोस्मिताम्.'
She is उत्स्मयसहिताम् – always smiling.
Why does she smile?
Her smile reflects the Ananda generated by her proximity to Bhagawan. Her permanent presence on his Vakshasthala immerses her in bliss, and that joy is reflected in the beautiful smile on her face.
हिरण्यप्राकाराम् – Mata sits in a Mani Mandapa (jewel-studded pavilion) enclosed by walls of gold (Hiranya Prakara).
आर्द्रां – करुणार्द्रहृदयाम् – She is soft and tender, filled with compassion for those who take refuge in her.
ज्वलन्ती – She is as brilliant as fire.
ज्वलन्तीं तेजसा स्वेन सा मे देवी प्रसीदतु – With glowing brilliance.
सहस्रादित्यसङ्काशां सहस्रेन्दुनिभाननाम् – As radiant as a thousand suns.
तृप्ताम् – She is ever satisfied. What more could she need? She has the eternal proximity of Bhagawan. Mata is Trupta (content).
तर्पयन्तीम् – Not only is she content herself, but she also makes others happy. Through her famous Kataksha (glance), she removes the Tapatraya (threefold miseries) of her devotees and brings them joy.
पद्मे स्थिताम् – She is seated on a lotus.
पद्मवर्णाम् – She has the color and luster of a lotus.
तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम् – Invoking her, inviting her to be present here.
