Rishi Angiras

Rishi Angiras

Sage Angiras is one of the revered Manasaputras (mind-born sons) of Lord Brahma, created directly by Brahma through the power of his mind. He is counted among the exalted Saptarshis, the seven great sages who guide the cosmos with their wisdom and spiritual power.

The Rishis, being celestial and timeless, can manifest in different forms during different epochs. In the first manvantara, known as the Swayambhuva Manvantara, Sage Angiras manifested directly from Brahma's mouth. The mouth represents the ability to articulate and communicate divine truths. This emphasizes Angiras' role as one among the seers of Rigvedic hymns. Brahma’s mouth is a symbol of creation through sound.  Angiras’ origin here underscores his connection to the creative energy that shapes and sustains the universe.

In the current manvantara, the Vaivasvata Manvantara, he is believed to have manifested from Agni, the fire god. This unique connection to fire aligns with the meaning of his name, 'Angiras,' which translates to 'born from fire.' Fire is considered the purest element, capable of purifying everything it touches. Angiras' origin from fire symbolizes his purity of character, spiritual refinement, and ability to guide others toward inner purification.

Sage Angiras was endowed with unparalleled brilliance, surpassing even that of Agni himself. Recognizing this, Agni Bhagavan, the fire god, humbly requested Sage Angiras to take over his role as the messenger of gods.  However, Sage Angiras, in his humility and wisdom, declined the offer, instead asking Agni Bhagavan to consider him as his son. This mutual respect highlights the deep bond between Angiras and the divine essence of fire.

Sage Angiras is also one of the Prajapatis, the progenitors of creation, entrusted with the responsibility of continuing the cycle of life. Among his notable descendants are Devaguru Brihaspati, the preceptor of the Devas (gods), renowned for his wisdom and mastery of the Vedas. Another group of celestial beings linked to Sage Angiras are the Havishmat Pitrus, a specific group of forefathers associated with sacrificial rituals and offerings.

Sage Angiras’ life and lineage exemplify divine brilliance, humility, and dedication to cosmic balance, making him a central figure in our spirituality and cosmology.
