Baudhayana was a sage, writer, mathematician, and commentator. He is known as the author of one of the three surviving religious texts called the Kalpa Sutras. The other two Kalpa Sutras were written by Apastamba and Hiranyakeshin. These texts are important for their guidance on Vedic rituals, domestic rites, and ethical behavior.
Each Kalpa Sutra includes three main components:
All three authors were part of the Taittiriya school of the Krishna Yajur Veda. Baudhayana is considered the oldest among them. Tradition states that Apastamba was Baudhayana’s disciple, and Hiranyakeshin was Apastamba’s disciple. This order is reflected in the texts. Baudhayana’s work is less organized compared to the other two. His language is more archaic, and his views are often less rigid.
Baudhayana’s contributions extend beyond religious texts. He is also celebrated for his work in mathematics. The Baudhayana Sulbasutra, one of the earliest Sulbasutras, provides guidelines for constructing altars and reveals significant mathematical discoveries.

Baudhayana Sutras
The Baudhayana Sutras are a collection of Vedic Sanskrit texts that cover rituals, daily practices, and dharma (moral duties). This collection includes six texts:
These texts belong to the Taittiriya branch of the Krishna Yajurveda school and are among the earliest works in their genre. Baudhayana’s Sulbasutra served as a foundation for later mathematical and geometric explorations in ancient India.
Legacy
Baudhayana’s texts are invaluable as sources for his successors. His contributions highlight the advanced state of mathematics and rituals in Vedic India. He influenced subsequent scholars and texts, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields of religion, mathematics, and geometry.
