Kishkindha was the region around the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka. Baali was the king there. On Shri Ramachandra's advice, Hanuman reached Kishkindha to help Sugriva, an incarnation of his guru, Surya.
Rakshasas ruled the regions around Kishkindha. Ravana’s assistants like Khara and Dushana were in power there. Baali, being very powerful, constantly defeated their attacks. Baali had a unique power. Half the strength of any enemy attacking him from the front would transfer to him. This made Baali stronger and his enemy weaker.
One day, Ravana attacked Baali from behind while he was performing his daily rituals in the river. Baali bound Ravana with his tail. Baali traveled to different holy places for prayers, dragging Ravana along. When Baali returned to Kishkindha, people mocked Ravana. Accepting defeat, Ravana sought Baali's friendship. Though Baali had nothing to gain, he accepted Ravana's request.
Hanuman disliked Asuras and Rakshasas by nature. He did not like Baali and Ravana’s friendship. Though Baali gave Hanuman a place in Kishkindha, Hanuman felt closer to Sugriva, Baali’s brother.
Mayavi, Mandodari’s brother who possessed magical powers wanted to take revenge on Baali for insulting Ravana. The Rakshasa came to Kishkindha and challenged Baali at the gate. Seeing Baali’s real size and form, the Rakshasa ran for his life. Baali chased him, followed by Hanuman and Sugriva. The Rakshasa climbed a mountain and entered a cave. Baali told Hanuman and Sugriva to wait outside for fifteen days and went inside.
Loud sounds of battle came from the cave for days. Hanuman and Sugriva did not know what was happening but waited as per Baali's order. After a few days, blood flowed out of the cave. Baali had killed the Rakshasa, but the Rakshasa cried out in Baali’s voice before dying. Thinking Baali was dead, Sugriva sealed the cave with a big rock to stop the Rakshasa from coming out.
Sugriva and Hanuman returned to Kishkindha. Everyone was sad, thinking Baali had died. Fearing an attack from the Rakshasa, the people needed a king for protection. Sugriva became the king at everyone’s request.
After killing the Rakshasa, Baali tried to come out but found the cave sealed. Baali thought Sugriva had betrayed him. He pushed the rock aside and returned to Kishkindha. Seeing Sugriva on the throne, Baali became sure of his suspicion. He believed Sugriva had locked him inside the cave to take the kingdom.
This is how Baali became an enemy of Sugriva.
