Puloma was Bhrigu Maharshi's wife. She was pregnant. Once, while Maharshi went for a bath, a rakshasa entered the ashrama.

The rakshasa was once attracted to Puloma. He wished to marry her. But Puloma's father refused this proposal. Puloma was married to Bhrigu Maharshi with Vedic rites and Agni as a witness.

However, the rakshasa could not forget Puloma. When he saw her alone in the ashram, he remembered everything. He wanted to confirm her identity. So, he asked the fire in the yagna, 'Is she Puloma?'

Agni was in a dilemma. Telling the truth could lead to harm, but lying was a sin. Agni answered, 'Yes, she is Puloma. But now, she is the wife of Bhrigu Maharshi through a lawful marriage. You have no right over her.'

Hearing this, the rakshasa took the form of a boar and carried Puloma away. In the shock, Puloma's unborn child fell from her womb. That child was Chyavana. Since he was born through a 'fall' (chyuti), he was named Chyavana.

The rakshasa was burnt to ashes by Chyavana's intense radiance as soon as he was born.
