When Navadvipa resonated with Sri Gauranga’s kirtan, a proud scholar, Panditraj Keshav Kashmiri, arrived. Riding a decorated palanquin with disciples, he approached the sacred river Bhagirathi. Known for his debating skills, his presence caused the scholars of Navadvipa to worry. Why did this great scholar come here? His goal was to challenge and conquer Navadvipa’s scholars.

Who Did He Meet There?

At the riverbank, Keshav Kashmiri saw a golden-complexioned youth. This youth, named Gauranga, wore a garland and smiled radiantly, leading a crowd in chanting Lord Krishna’s name. The scholar, though proud of his knowledge, felt a deep attraction and respect for Gauranga but was held back by his own pride. Who was this youth? He was Gauranga, known for his devotion and wisdom.

What Happened During Their Encounter?

Keshav Kashmiri expressed his desire for a debate. Gauranga humbly asked him to describe the sacred river Ganga’s glory instead. The scholar composed a hundred new verses praising the Ganges. Gauranga, with great skill, pointed out flaws in the verses. Keshav Kashmiri felt deep shame. What was the result? His defeat made him realize Gauranga’s divine nature.

How Did Keshav Kashmiri Change?

Understanding Gauranga’s divinity, Keshav Kashmiri's pride melted. He begged for self-liberation at Gauranga’s feet. Gauranga advised him to focus on devotion to Lord Krishna instead of debates. Keshav Kashmiri became Gauranga’s disciple and dedicated himself to spreading Krishna’s devotion. What did he do next? He protected Mathura Mandal from invaders, preserving its sanctity.

What Can We Learn from This?

Keshav Kashmiri’s story teaches the value of humility and devotion. Recognizing true wisdom leads to inner peace. His transformation shows that devotion, not pride, brings true fulfillment.
