In very few words Vaisampayana told Janamejaya the essence of Mahabharata.
But then Janamejaya said: I want to hear everything in detail.
How my predecessors the Pandvas famous for their virtues, how they could kill so many invincible warriors in the battlefield, how they could tolerate the atrociities of the Kauravas, even Bhima who had the strenght of 10,000 elephants, how could he patiently tolerate all these,Draupadi was so powerful, just by one look she could have turned everyone into ashes, how did she tolerate, gambling is bad, it is a vice, how did the son of Dharmaraja, Yudhishtira got addicted to gambling? How could his brothers support him in this?
I want to know everything in detail.

Vaisampayana said, Mahabharata as told by my Guruji is vast.
There are 1,00,000 shlokas is Mahabharata.
It has to be narrated in a certain sequence, or else you will get lost.
You have to listen to everything patiently, without hurrying.
Then only you will be able to understand.
It is so vast.
But before that let me tell you the benefits of listening to Mahabharata.

Whoever narrates Mahabharata or listens to Mahabharata, they will attain Brahmaloka and become equal to Gods.
Mahabharata can purify you just like the Vedas.
Mahabharata describes virtues, the means of leading a virtuous life and eventually how to attain liberation.
Mahabharata is Dharma-shastra, Artha-shastra and Moksha-shastra at the same time.
Listening to Mahabharata will wash away all the sins of the past.
Washing away of sins means even the ill effects of those sins will be gone.
If a ruler listens to Mahabharata, he will defeat all enemies and rule over the whole earth.
Mahabharata can give children to the chidless just by listening to it.
If a royal couple listens to Mahabharata, they will beget a son or a daughter who will sit on the throne.
वीरं जनयते पुत्रं कन्यां वा राज्यभागिनीम्
Very clear, there is no discrimination between son and daughter.
Children of parents who listen to Mahabharata will be affectionate towards them, will treat them with love and respect.
Bosses who listen to Mahbharata will get subordinates who are loyal to them.
Those who listen to Mahabharata, they will become healthy.
They will become wealthy and famous.
They will have a long and comfortable life.
Mahabharata contains the legends of Devas, Rajarshis and Brahmarshis who had attained perfection.
Mahabharata talks about the greatness of Bhagava Srikrishna.
Mahabharata talks about the greatness of Devadhideva Mahadeva and Devi Parvathy and Kartikeya.
If Mahabharata is listened to during pregnancy then a brilliant child will be born.
If an unmarried youngster listens to Mahabharata, he or she will get an excellent spouse.
Business men who listen to Mahabharata, they will do very well in business.
Soldiers, policemen , they will meet with success.
Listen to a little bit every day.
But don't skip listening to Mahabharata even for a day.
Mahabharata has a lot of legends on various topics:about virtues, kings, rishis, gandharwas, rakshasas, holy places, about superntural powers, battle strategy, there is nothing that you can not find in Mahabharata.
While shraadha is being performed it the bhoktas are made to listen to even one fourth of a shloka of Mahabharata, the forefathers will become happy.
One of the reasons it is named Mahabharata is because the legends associated with the Bharata vamsha is the main topic of Mahabharata.
Sage Vyasa wrote Mahabharata in three years.
Listening to Mahbharata is very enjoyable, it is so interesting.
Narrating and listenig to Mahabharata give the results of having performed Ashwamedha and Rajasuya yagas.
Mind becomes clean and pure.
Virtues develop.
You will become succesful in whatever you do.
धर्मे चार्थे च कामे च मोक्षे च भरतर्षभ।
यदिहास्ति तदन्यत्र यन्नेहास्ति न तत् क्वचित्॥
Be it dharma, be it artha, be it kama, be it moksha.
Any book on any of these subjects, whatever is there in those books it will be there in Mahabharata also.
If ssomething is not there in Mahabharata, then you won't be able to find it elsewhere.
