Shloka nos.13 and 14 of the 5th chapter of Durga Saptashati.

Here, Devi is being addressed as Chetana and Buddhi.

What is the difference between Chetana and Buddhi?

To understand the difference, let’s go through the process of yoga reaching up to samadhi.

Let us say you decide to practice yoga.

This is a decision that you make based on knowledge that it is good for you.

It is an intelligent decision.

You have gathered information about yoga.

You analyze it using your intelligence.

Then you come to the conclusion that it is good for you.

This is Buddhi.

While practicing, you proceed through pratyahara, dharana, and dhyana.

Then you come to the state of nirvikalpa samadhi in which your mind is just empty.

There are no thoughts, images, or emotions.

This is Chetana.

This state of pure awareness is Chetana.

When you come out of this state, again your Buddhi starts working.

Chetana and Buddhi are Devi alone.

When you are using your intelligence, Devi is operating through you.

When you are in the state of pure awareness, she alone is present in your body.
