Abhayamudra is a posture of the hand conveying the idea - Don’t be afraid. I am there for you.
This is a very common mudra seen in many Gods and Goddesses in Hinduism.
Abhayamudra also represents fearlessness when used in sadhana.
Mudras are used in sadhana to attain layabhava (merging into) certain ideas or states.
In abhayamudra, either of the hands is held up, with the palm open and facing away from oneself.
The fingers are held together.
श्रीभगवानुवाच - ज्ञानं परमं गुह्यं मे यद्विज्ञानसमन्वितम् | स-रहस्यं तदङ्गं च गृहाण गदितं मया - Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (2.9.31). - The knowledge about Bhagavan has - 1. Confidential Nature: The knowledge is described as 'parama-guhya', meaning it is of the highest confidentiality. It is not easily accessible to everyone and requires a level of spiritual maturity to comprehend. 2. Scientific Understanding: The term 'vijñāna' emphasizes that this knowledge is not abstract but has a practical, scientific basis. It provides a profound understanding of the nature of reality and the Supreme Being. 3. Mystical Elements: The phrase 'sa-rahasyaṁ' indicates that this knowledge contains mystical and secret elements, adding layers of depth that go beyond ordinary understanding. 4. Comprehensive Teachings: 'Tad-aṅgaṁ' refers to the components or aspects of this knowledge, suggesting that it is comprehensive and covers various dimensions of spiritual science. 5. Divine Revelation: 'Gṛhāṇa gaditaṁ mayā' signifies that the knowledge is being directly revealed by the Supreme Lord, emphasizing its authenticity and divine origin.
