In Sanskrit, Bhima (भीमः) means बिभेत्यस्मादिति - someone to be scared of. Everybody is scared of him.

Originally, this is one of the names of Lord Shiva. Among the eight forms of Lord Shiva (Ashtamurthys), Bhima represents Akasha.

It is also the name of Lord Vishnu as given in Vishnu Sahasranama - अतुलः शरभो भीमः समयज्ञो हविर्हरिः।

Bhima is the name of the second brother among the Pandavas.
