Dharma Shastra prescribes various measures for a safe pregnancy and the health of the mother and the child.

For the wife
- Avoid bumpy roads, adventure, exhausting movements, jerky movements, boat rides, carrying heavy objects, and pressure on the stomach.
- Avoid grief, stress, and worries
- Avoid excessive work.
- Do not sleep during the day.
- Do not stay awake at night.
- After Pumsavanam ceremony avoid- physical relationships, pungent and strong drugs, and spices
- After the fifth month, do not take part in religious rituals.
- Do not eat during twilight.
- Do not go near anthills, ash heap, bones, skulls, bathe in deep water, stay in empty rooms, draw on the ground with nails, ash, or charcoal.
- Avoid yawning and stretching of the body.
- Keep the hair always tied.
- Maintain cleanliness and hygiene.
- Do not quarrel, laugh much, or utter inauspicious words.
- Keep the feet dry
- Serve the elders, give alms, and be concerned about the well-being of the husband.
- Always be peaceful and cheerful.
For the husband
- Fulfill wife's all reasonable desires and demands.
- Avoid long-distance travel, bathing in the sea, and hair cut after the third month.
- Do not carry a corpse during cremation.
- After the seventh month, avoid pilgrimages.
