King Kakudmi and Revati: A Journey Through Time

In the Srimad Bhagavata Purana, there is a story about King Kakudmi and his daughter Revati. They traveled to Brahmaloka to find a suitable husband for her. However, when they returned to Earth, they discovered that time had passed differently. Many ages had gone by, and everyone they knew had passed away. Revati then married Balarama, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. This story highlights the concept of time dilation in our scriptures.

Why are the Rishis asking for the essence of all Shastras?

Kaliyuga was approaching. In Kaliyuga people will be less intelligent. They will not have the capacity to differentiate between right and wrong. They will become cruel. They will not be interested in the Supreme truth. They will be only concerned about their own gains and physical pleasures. Their lifespan will be less. Nobody will have the time and interest to learn all the Shastras. If the essence of the Shastras is given to them, then there is a chance that they might use it for their own benefit.

A gopika friend of Lord Krishna, his childhood friend.
She once came to the Lord.
She had been married for 10 or 12 years
She didn’t have a child.
You know how it used to be.
It was very difficult those days, for a woman, if she doesn't give birth to a child.
It used to be very humiliating.
People around will keep on taunting.
It’s really hard on the woman.
The Gopika knew who Krishna was.
He was all-powerful
She told Bhagawan, I can't take it anymore.
Please help me.
The Lord said: do one thing, go across the river.
Ashrama of sage Durvasa is there.
He will solve your problem.
But, Gopika said: how will I cross the river?
There is no bridge, there is no boat even.
The Lord said: go and tell the river, if Krishna is a brahmachari, give way for me to go.
The gopika was perplexed, Krishna and brahmachari!
16108 wives and still counting...
Anyway, she had complete faith in the Lord.
She went to the river and repeated what the Lord said.
The river stopped flowing, parted into two across its width and the gopika walked through.
On the other side, she saw Sage Durvasa, offered him respect, and told him her problem.
The Sage was having food at that time.
He took out a fruit from whatever he was eating and gave it to the gopika.
And said, have this fruit, your wish will be fulfilled.
Gopika became so happy.
But, how will I go back, how will I cross the river?
The Sage said: do one thing, tell the river, if Sage Durvasa never takes food, then allow me to go.
She was again shocked.
What is this?
The Sage is having food right now and he says he doesn't take food!
She went back to the river and repeated as the Sage told.
The river indeed parted and allowed her to go.
She came back, ate the fruit and was blessed with a child.
But this mystery never went away from her mind.
How can this be so?
If what they told were untrue, then the river would not have parted.
But Krishna and brahmachari!
The Sage said he never takes food while having food.
She decided to go to the Lord and asked.
Oh that, I have not married for myself.
It is to satisfy their wish that I have married all of them.
And the Sage, he never takes food for himself.
People come and offer him things out of respect and devotion.
He takes them so that they are not disappointed.
See the principle.
Action without attachment is not action at all.
It will never bind you.
